Woman attempts suicide in Bhola courtroom after husband granted bail in dowry case

A 45-year-old woman attempted suicide inside a Bhola courtroom on Wednesday, drinking poison moments after a judge granted bail to her husband in a case involving dowry demands and bigamy. The incident occurred at the Burhanuddin Upazila Magistrate Court during proceedings for the case filed by the woman, Tara Bhanu, against her husband, Baharuddin.

According to court and local officials, the hearing was scheduled for the formal framing of charges. The court ultimately moved to grant bail to Baharuddin on the condition of a potential reconciliation and further ordered the dismissal of charges against the defendant’s parents, who were co-accused in the case.

Witnesses and legal professionals present in the courtroom reported that Tara Bhanu, a native of Jamalpur, reacted with immediate distress upon hearing the court’s decision. She pulled a small bottle from her bag and ingested the contents before collapsing in front of the judge’s dais. The judge promptly recessed the session and ordered the courtroom cleared as chaos erupted among those in attendance.

Police and bystanders intervened immediately to transport the woman to the Bhola Sadar Hospital. Court police inspector Sekh Md. Nasir Uddin confirmed the details of the incident, noting that security personnel coordinated the emergency transfer.

Tayebur Rahman, superintendent of the Sadar Hospital, stated that the woman underwent an emergency gastric lavage upon arrival. While she remains under intensive care, medical staff have yet to declare her out of danger, keeping her under strict observation as she continues treatment.
