Three members of a family were sentenced to death, three were sentenced to life for murdering a farmer in Mymensingh

In the case of murder of farmer Ashrab Ali (75) due to a land dispute in Mymensingh’s Phulpur, the court has awarded death sentence to three members of the same family and life imprisonment to three others. Judge Farhana Ferdous of Mymensingh Special Judge’s Court gave this verdict on Monday afternoon.

The three sentenced to death are Noor Hossain (57), his son Ujjwal Mia (32) and Sohrab Ali’s son Sahidul Islam (37). Apart from the death penalty, they have also been fined 30 thousand rupees.

Sohrab Ali (64), his wife Swarupa Khatun (57) and Noor Hossain’s wife Rehana Khatun (54) were sentenced to life imprisonment. The three sentenced for life were ordered to pay a fine of 50,000 taka, and in default of payment, they were ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for another 6 months. The houses of the convicts are in Deokhali village of Rambhadrapur union of Phulpur upazila.

According to the summary of the court, there was a dispute with Ashrab Ali, a resident of Deokhali village, over the neighbour’s land. As a result of the dispute, on January 18, 2014, when he went to cultivate the land, he was hacked to death by the opponents. Julhas Uddin, the son of the person killed in the incident, filed a case naming 13 people as the plaintiff. The Detective Branch (DB) of the district police filed a charge sheet against 6 accused in the court on August 16, 2017. The court accepted the testimony of 16 witnesses.

The judge announced the verdict today in the presence of six defendants. At that time, one of the accused in the dock said, ‘We did not commit murder.’ Later, when the accused were taken out of the court, Ujjal Mia, who was sentenced to death, kept saying, ‘We are not committing this murder, they are committing it.’ Police, DB have given reports, they are doing this murder, we are not doing this murder.’ While being taken into police custody, he continued to say, ‘Three are reporting, they are (murdering), and one is reporting that we are killing. They are sentenced based on the three reports, we are not.

Rezaul Karim, the younger brother of Sohrab Uddin, who was sentenced to life, said, “Myself, Myra Ainya is saying Raikhya Kaiche Mairalche next to my brother’s house.” Seeing the body, my brothers ran home. We will appeal to the higher court. We will see, Ker Laiga did false events. We did not get justice. We will go where we get fine judgment.’

Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, the plaintiff Julhas Mia said, “There was a dispute with us about the land for about 30 years. On the day of the incident, when my father went to cultivate the land, my father was killed according to a premeditated plan. After 13 long years we got justice, we are satisfied with this verdict. I demand that the execution of the accused be carried out quickly.

Akram Hossain, the lawyer of the state, said, “The testimony of 16 witnesses has been accepted in this case. We have been able to prove it in this case through evidence. Justice has been established in this judgment.
