The students of Jahangirnagar University temporarily suspended the agitation with an ultimatum to arrest a student within the next 48 hours. They have also threatened the resignation of the university’s proctorial team and class boycott if the accused is not arrested within the stipulated time.
The protesting students said this after a discussion with the Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan at around 3:30 pm on Wednesday.

Earlier, around 10:30 pm, thousands of women students took out a protest march from Tarzan area of the university. Students also participated in the march in solidarity. At the end of the procession, the students protested first at the proctor’s office and then in front of the new administration building.
Talking to some of the protesting students, it is known that thousands of women students started protesting against the arrest of the accused in the rape attempt and the insecurity of the administration at around 10:30 pm yesterday. The procession took a few streets and first stopped in front of the Proctor’s office. At this time, they demanded the arrest and trial of the rapist. At one stage, one of the protesting students announced a five-point demand. Prominent among the points announced before the proctor’s office were the arrest of the accused within 24 hours, the resignation of the proctor and the proctorial team after admitting responsibility. Apart from this, some of the students also demanded the resignation of the vice-chancellor.

According to eyewitnesses, after the five-point announcement in front of the proctor’s office, many of the general students disagreed with all the demands. Apart from this, two sides are created among the students by making allegations that the leaders and workers of a particular student organization are leading one side. At one stage, they began to agitate on two sides. Then at around 12:15 a.m., the agitators started the agitation in front of the new administrative building of the university. The students protesting in front of the administration building divided into two sides.
On the one hand there was a section of general students including Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shakti and Chhatra Front leaders and activists. On the other hand, the students union, the leaders and activists of the organization and the general students who politicize under the banner of progressive students in the campus. For a long time the two sides continued to separate. After that, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan sat in discussion with some women students from the two protesting parties in the administrative building. The women students present in that discussion made six demands to the Vice-Chancellor. When the Vice-Chancellor assured to fulfill the demands, the students returned to the hall around 3:30 pm.
The first of the students’ demands: arrest the culprit within 48 hours. If the first demand is not met, the university administration should accept responsibility for the failure of the proctor and the members of the proctorial team to resign, take effective measures to prevent harassment, form quick response teams and ensure their round-the-clock activation under the direct supervision of the proctorial team, launch an active and functional hotline emergency hotline, strengthen campus security, deploy adequate security guards at every gate and structure within seven days The loopholes should be rectified, women security personnel should be appointed on campus and included in quick response teams, cyber security laws should be formulated and implemented for students on campus.
Naziha Nawar, a student of the University’s Department of Economics, who participated in the movement, told Prothom Alo, “Our clear six-point demand has been given in writing to the Vice-Chancellor. He assured us to implement the demands. If our demands are not met, then we will go back to the program and boycott classes and exams from next Sunday.
Last Tuesday around 11 pm, a man tried to rape a female student by dragging her from the road adjacent to the abandoned Faziltunnecha Hall to a dark place. Later yesterday afternoon, the university administration filed a case against an unknown person at the Ashulia police station.
