Satkhira Lawmaker Faces Growing Protests Over Leaked Video Scandal

Protesters gathered in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, on Tuesday to demand the resignation of local Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam following the emergence of controversial footage involving the lawmaker on social media. Demonstrators under the banner of the “Sachetan Nagarik Samaj” (Conscious Citizens Society) blocked the main road in front of the local government food warehouse, causing significant traffic disruptions along the Shyamnagar-Munshiganj route.
The protest marks the latest escalation in a week-long wave of demonstrations, which have included protest marches, rallies, and the burning of effigies across the constituency. The outcry follows the circulation of video clips on July 20 appearing to show the MP in intimate moments with a young woman. While Islam subsequently claimed on his official Facebook page that the woman in the footage is his second wife, the explanation has failed to quell public anger.
During Tuesday’s sit-in, local speakers argued that a public representative must uphold a high standard of moral conduct. Local resident Abdul Majid stated that the controversy has deeply damaged public trust, insisting that the MP should accept moral responsibility and step down from his position. Other speakers emphasized that the integrity of the parliamentary seat remains at risk and called for a formal investigation into the matter.
Tensions in the region remain high, with local leaders warning of more severe action if their demands are not met. They have threatened to paralyze the entire Satkhira district and surround the lawmaker’s residence if he refuses to resign. Furthermore, protesters have declared Islam persona non grata in Shyamnagar, vowing to prevent his entry into the area.
In the wake of the scandal, the Jamaat-e-Islami party has officially expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam. The MP has remained out of the public eye since the incident gained national attention.
