Rajshahi University Student Files Attempted Murder Case Against Nine Campus Leaders

A legal complaint has been filed in a Rajshahi court against nine individuals, including former student leadership figures, for the alleged attempted murder of Rajshahi University student Mahmudul Hasan. The petition, submitted by the victim’s father, M.S. Asad Uzzaman, follows an alleged violent assault at the university’s central library earlier this week.
According to the victim’s lawyer, Hazrat Ali, the court did not immediately accept the filing as a formal case. Instead, it has directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the allegations before further legal action is taken.
The accused include Salauddin Ammar, the former General Secretary of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RAKSU), alongside eight other current and former student leaders and activists. The complaint further cites 17 to 18 unidentified individuals as participants in the attack. Among those named are S.M. Salman Sabbir, Nazmus Sakib, Mehedi Sajib, Fahim Reza, Ariful Islam, Ahsan Ulla Farhan, Sifat Abu Saleh, and Nurul Islam Shahid.
The petition details that the victim, a first-year student in the Department of Sanskrit, was studying in the central library last Monday when he was surrounded by a group of approximately 20 armed individuals. The attackers allegedly wielded iron rods, machetes, knives, and wooden sticks. The complaint states that Salauddin Ammar struck the victim in the head and forehead three times with an iron rod, while others inflicted injuries to his eyes, chest, and back. The assailants allegedly attempted to strangle the victim and, upon believing he had succumbed to his injuries, briefly stopped, only to resume the assault when they noticed him moving as he was being placed into an ambulance.
The plaintiff claims that he initially attempted to file a formal report with the Motihar Police Station the day after the incident, but officers refused to register the case. This prompted the move to seek legal redress through the court system.
Following the incident, both the victim and another student, Anas, were taken into police custody. They were arrested as suspects in an earlier terrorism-related case filed with Shah Makhdum Police Station and are currently being held in jail under court order while receiving medical treatment.
