Ragging complaint against 10 students in Rajshahi University, the administration found the truth

10 first year students of the same department have accused some senior students of the Tourism and Hospitality Management Department of Rajshahi University of ragging, mental-physical torture and death threats. They gave a written complaint to the proctor’s office of the university on Sunday afternoon. The university administration has initially found the truth in this incident.
The accused students are Tanvirul Islam, Aftab Imon, Sajib Rahman, Oli Ahmed, Reoy Khan, Tasibul Fahad, Mahfuzul Islam, Farhad Reza of the academic year 2023-24, Nafiul Islam of the academic year 2021-22 and Nomayet Islam of the first year. The written complaint submitted to the Proctoral Body was signed by 10 first year students.
It is mentioned in the written complaint that some of them are being subjected to constant threats, intimidation, torture and harassment by a group of senior students of the department. They were regularly called to Binodpur area and treated humiliatingly in the name of ‘teaching manners’. He used to introduce himself 50 to 100 times, recite distorted poems, sing songs, force to show private conversations, use unnecessary abuse, threaten to beat, make ugly comments about family and write names of seniors for several pages in notebooks. Apart from this, the accused also threatened the seniors if they did not respond to their calls and imposed restrictions on the use of personal IDs on social media.
In the written complaint, referring to the protest in November last year demanding the removal of a teacher in the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, the fresh students were forced to participate in the protest. They were also threatened to ‘boycott’ the entire batch if they wanted to remain neutral in that movement.
It is also said in the written complaint that a student was called and tortured again last Saturday afternoon in Binodpur area. At one stage he left there. He was later called by his classmates and threatened with death if he did not attend. The students were called to the campus yesterday with a false notice and forced to apologize to the seniors. Threats of ‘boycott’ from the department and batch were also mentioned in the charge sheet. However, the accused Oli Ahmed completely denied the issue of ragging and told Prothom Alo that he has been staying at home since last Wednesday. According to him, none of the classmates are involved in this incident.
Another accused Tasibul Fahad said, “We juniors and seniors all sat together. We did not give any rag. We as seniors sat down to discuss their freshmanship. There was no incident of ragging.
Accused Tanvirul Islam and Reoy Khan’s mobile phone calls were made to ask for their statements, but they did not respond.
When asked about this, the president of the department, Professor Zahid Hossain told Prothom Alo, ‘After the students informed me verbally about the matter, I asked them to submit a written complaint to the university administration. The administration has already taken note of the matter. The department has sent instructions to inform the names and IDs of the accused students. Ragging is not desirable in any way, maximum cooperation will be given by the department.
University Proctor Professor Mahbubur Rahman told Prothom Alo that they received a written complaint yesterday. Initially got the facts of the incident. No investigation committee was made in this incident. The matter will be referred directly to the University Disciplinary Subcommittee. Then a decision will be made there.
