Police Rescue Three Trafficked Children From Forced Begging in Dhaka

Kushtia railway police have rescued three children from Dhaka, one month after they were abducted from the Poradaha railway station area and forced into begging. Two suspects linked to the trafficking ring have been arrested as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle the network operating along the rail lines.

The operation was detailed during a press conference on Monday by Khulna Railway District Superintendent of Police, Ahmad Moinul Hasan. The rescued children, aged between 9 and 10, all hail from the Mirpur sub-district of Kushtia. They were abducted between 8:55 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on April 27 while at the Poradaha junction.

The breakthrough in the investigation followed a formal complaint filed by one of the victims’ mothers on June 6. Acting on intelligence, police apprehended Fate Akter, 21, in the Gopalpur area of Mirpur. Her subsequent testimony led officers to a second suspect, 40-year-old Shahanaz Begum.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted to abducting the children and transporting them to Jashore via the Mahananda Express train. According to police reports, the children were sold for 20,000 taka before being moved to Dhaka to be exploited for forced begging. Acting on information provided by the detainees, a social organization discovered the children at Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station. Because the victims were unable to provide their addresses at the time, they were placed into protective custody before being reunited with the Poradaha railway police.

Poradaha Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nasir Khan confirmed that the two arrested suspects have been remanded to judicial custody to face charges of kidnapping and human trafficking. The rescued children have been returned to their families following the completion of legal procedures.

Superintendent Hasan emphasized that the railway police maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward human trafficking and the exploitation of children. He added that investigations remain ongoing to identify and apprehend additional members of the criminal network, while surveillance at railway stations has been significantly heightened to prevent further incidents.
