Police Officer Withdrawn Amid Protests Over Bribery Allegations in Narayanganj Murder Case

A murder investigation is underway in Narayanganj’s Bandar upazila following the death of 18-year-old hosiery worker Md. Jobayer, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent robbery. The victim’s father, Jahangir Hossain, formally filed a homicide case on Monday, naming two suspects and an unidentified accomplice. Authorities have since apprehended one of the accused, 25-year-old Mehedi Hasan.
The incident occurred on the night of June 3, when Jobayer was ambushed while returning home after his shift. According to police reports, the assailants intercepted the young man—who also worked part-time as an auto-rickshaw driver—in the Sonakanda Enayetnagar area. During the confrontation, Mehedi Hasan allegedly stabbed Jobayer in the lower back before fleeing with his mobile phone and 3,000 taka. Although bystanders rushed him to Narayanganj Hospital and he was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency care, he died from his wounds on Sunday morning.

The legal proceedings were marred by controversy, as Jobayer’s family and local residents staged a protest at the Bandar Police Station on Sunday night, carrying the victim’s body to demand action. Protesters alleged that officers had initially refused to file a complaint, with the family claiming that Sub-Inspector Masud Rana demanded a bribe of 10,000 taka to process the case.
In response to the public outcry and allegations of professional misconduct, police officials confirmed that Sub-Inspector Rana has been withdrawn from duty pending an internal inquiry. Officer-in-Charge Golam Moktar Ashraf Uddin stated that law enforcement is currently conducting an active search for the remaining suspects involved in the fatal attack. The second named suspect, identified as 27-year-old Sajib, remains at large.
