Dhaka University Law Department Professor Asif Nazrul has confirmed that Tarique Rahman, the son of Bangladesh’s former President Ziaur Rahman, was indeed a student at the institution, dispelling recent social media speculation about his academic history.

The clarification from the university’s law teacher comes amidst public discourse on social media, which questioned whether Tarique Rahman had ever been a student there. Professor Nazrul explicitly affirmed, “He was definitely a student of Dhaka University. He was admitted to the Law Department in the 1985-86 batch and attended classes for a couple of months. As a senior student in the Law Department at that time, I knew about this personally.”

Professor Nazrul also highlighted that several well-known personalities were Tarique Rahman’s classmates, including former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, former advisor Rizwana Hasan, and current Supreme Court Appellate Division Justice Farah Mahbub.

Providing insight into why Tarique Rahman’s studies ceased, Professor Nazrul explained that the country was under the “strong rule of Ershad” at the time. He added that there were allegations of Ershad’s involvement in the assassination of late President Ziaur Rahman, suggesting that Tarique Rahman’s education at Dhaka University likely concluded due to security concerns.
