Prime Minister’s instructions to the police to treat criminals as criminals

Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has directed police officers to treat criminals as criminals, regardless of their political identity. At the same time, he reiterated the government’s uncompromising stand against corruption, terrorism and misrule.
Addressing the police officers, the Prime Minister said, ‘Many times you have to face political identity or political influence while working to fight corruption and terrorism. I want to make it clear today, don’t consider anyone’s political identity. Whoever commits a crime will be treated as a criminal. Application of law is equal for all. You will fulfill your responsibilities for the welfare of the state and the people.

He said this while addressing the police officers in an event organized on the occasion of Police Week-2026 at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon of the capital on Monday morning.
The Prime Minister said that the role of the police in building a strong, accountable, legal and people-friendly state system is undeniable. The government does not want to compromise with corruption, terrorism and misrule. He also said that at the moment, the police is playing a direct role in the control of law and order at the field level of the country. Therefore, if the police members demonstrate their ability to successfully fulfill the duties assigned to them, the current government will also be able to take a step forward in the path of establishing a safe Bangladesh.

Pointing out that the nature of crime has increased due to technology, the Prime Minister said that as the nature of crime has changed, the scope of police administration has also expanded. So now police activities are not limited to cities or districts like a few decades ago. He also said, ‘At present, “transnational organized crime” is a global reality. This is why we especially need every police officer to be versatile. It is now the demand of time. In such a reality every post is very important in police administration and not certain posts. So it is important to have a professional mindset to work in all positions of the administration.
Addressing the policemen, the Prime Minister further said, “If the concerned officials compromise on professionalism just for promotion or posting at their preferred place, the concerned officers may get temporary satisfaction, but it is a compromise on professionalism.” So my special request to you is to perform your duty seriously in the police administration. Only then will we be able to ensure an efficient dynamic and professional police administration.”
Pointing out that power is not permanent, the Prime Minister said, “This government is for five years. Similarly, no post in public administration or police administration is permanent for anyone. That is why I do not want to see today’s meeting as a mere formality. Rather, let this meeting become an important commitment moment for the direction of the future in the control of law and order in the country.
Stating that the government will also work for the welfare of the police force, Tariq Rahman said, “Honesty, talent and efficiency will be the principles of recruitment, transfer and posting in the administration.” We know that the responsibility of the police is never limited to a specific time.
Pointing out that there is no alternative to efficient, courageous, honest and impartial police administration for the success of a government, the Prime Minister said, “When in danger, people go to the police first.” I believe, if the police really want to play a legal and tactical role, many cases can be settled at the beginning.
Referring to the situation after August 5, 2024, Tariq Rahman said that in the last one and a half years, the police have dealt with various difficult situations strategically and in many cases have succeeded in controlling mob violence.
Stating that the government wants to transform the police into a truly people-friendly force, Tariq Rahman said that this government wants a police administration that will be people-friendly and trusted by the people. Because, in any country, people generally consider the police administration as a mirror of the government. So if the police administration is successful, it is practically considered as the success of the government.
The Prime Minister said, “The relationship between the police and the people will be legal and humane.” Along with all other activities, a significant amount of time is spent in your police operations to control political instability. This is also a part of your responsibility. The current government must ensure the democratic and political rights of the people. But we all have to keep in mind that no one should engage in any kind of destructive activities or communal harmony in the society.’
Stating that it is the government’s aim to bring every person of the state and society within the national and social safety net, irrespective of the party, the Prime Minister said that the policemen should keep the issue of people’s safety in mind first. For this, they have to fulfill the responsibility given to them with seriousness and sincerity.
Referring to how people will evaluate the government, much of it depends on the behavior and activities of the police, Tariq Rahman said, the state expects honesty, efficiency, service, fairness, professionalism and humanity from the police. He said, ‘If you can possess these qualities as much as possible, then the slogan “My Police, My Country – Bangladesh First” will be truly successful and meaningful. Let us all move forward with as much concession as possible for the country, nation and people from our respective positions.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary of Home Ministry Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police (IGP) spoke at the event. Ali Hossain Fakir, Additional IGP AKM Aulad Hossain and other senior police officers.
At this time, the police officers presented their various demands before the Prime Minister. They also said that Bangladesh Police is always ready to assist the government in maintaining peace and order in the country. Police, military and civil officers were present on the occasion.
In the event, a documentary was aired on the sacrifices of police officers in various crises of the country since the liberation war, activities and initiatives taken by martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to improve the police force. After the ceremony, the Prime Minister took part in a photo session with police officials in front of the Tiger Gate.

In the meeting, Prime Minister Tariq Rahman told the police officials, “This country belongs to all of us.” Everyone should protect the country. We may not all be of the same ideology. But when you work with the government, your different ideologies should not be reflected in that work.
The Prime Minister also said, ‘Everyone’s dissent will be reflected only in the ballot box. Before that we will all love this country. We will all be united for the sake of the country.
