Natore 7-year-old child referred to 21-year-old case, plaintiff summoned to court

In Gurdaspur of Natore, a case of attempt to murder has been registered against a 7-year-old child by showing his age as 21 years. The incident came to light when the child came to the Natore Children’s Court to seek bail on Sunday afternoon. The judge granted his bail plea and summoned the plaintiff to court.
According to the sources of the court and the concerned lawyer, a child dressed in school clothes surrendered to the juvenile court and applied for bail as an accused in an attempt to murder case of Gurdaspur police station. Court Judge (District and Sessions Judge) Muhammad Rafiqul Islam asked his lawyer about the age of the accused. After examining the information and documents provided by the lawyer, the judge determined the age of the accused to be seven years seven months two days. He expressed surprise that the child’s age was written as 21 years in the First Information Report (FIR) registered by the officer-in-charge of Gurdaspur police station. He questioned the allegation of attempted murder by beating someone with a hammer on behalf of the child. Later he granted bail to the child with a surety of Tk 500 in the custody of a lawyer. At the same time, the plaintiff of the case, Shahanur Rahman, was summoned to appear in court on the next scheduled date.
Defendant’s lawyer Shamim Uddin Pramanik said that the plaintiff has declared the child’s age as 21 years out of anger. According to his birth certificate, his age is seven years seven months two days. After confirming this, the court granted bail and summoned the plaintiff to the court.
The child’s father said, “My son does not know anything about the alleged incident in the case. He was in the school class at the time of the incident (April 9). The headmaster of that school confirmed the matter in writing. He demanded exemplary punishment of the plaintiff in this incident.
In this regard, Shahanur Rahman, the plaintiff of the case, said on the phone, “We estimated 21 years and wrote. But it will be 15 years. My son was killed. Whoever he named, they have been made accused. According to the birth certificate, when the child was told that he was 7 years old, he refused to speak.
Gurdaspur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manjurul Alam said, ‘The case arose out of a fight that took place in the school grounds on April 9. I was not aware of making a seven-year-old child an accused. Confusion has arisen as the plaintiff has written his age as 21 years. The matter will be looked into.
