Man Tied to Tree, Beaten Over Theft Allegations in Rajshahi; Video Surfaces

A young man was severely beaten and tied to a tree after being accused of theft in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, with a video of the assault circulating widely on social media, sparking public outcry. The incident occurred on Sunday in the Motihor police station area.
The victim, identified as Tushar, 18, a resident of the Kazla Bilpara neighborhood, was seen in the 45-second video being repeatedly struck with sticks by two assailants while bound to a tree. The footage shows Tushar enduring at least 14 blows and crying out in pain. One of the attackers is heard saying “I’ve started it” just before the beating commences, indicating the recording was intentional.

Tushar has been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment. Motihor police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Golam Kabir stated that while initial reports suggest Tushar was targeted for alleged theft, the specifics of the accusation remain unclear. He emphasized that taking the law into one’s own hands, including physical assault and filming such acts, constitutes a criminal offense. Legal action will be pursued once the victim is discharged from the hospital and files a formal complaint.
