Man detained for lynching dog in Jamalpur after viral video sparks outrage

A viral video showing a dog being hanged from a tree in the Melandah upazila of Jamalpur has sparked widespread public outrage and condemnation from animal rights activists. The incident, which took place in front of Mahmudpur Ideal High School, occurred after the animal allegedly bit a goat belonging to a local resident, Raju Sarkar.
According to reports, Sarkar sought retribution for the attack on his livestock by tethering the dog with a rope and hanging it from a tree on July 23. Following the circulation of the footage on social media, the act drew sharp criticism from the local community and animal welfare groups alike. In response to the growing backlash, Sarkar briefly went into hiding to evade accountability.
Sohail Rana, a member of the Jamalpur District Jubo Dal, intervened upon learning of the incident and assisted in identifying the perpetrator. He emphasized the necessity of treating animals with humanity, urging the public to refrain from such acts of cruelty. Following his identification, local police and administrative officials took Sarkar into custody for questioning.
Melandah Upazila Executive Officer Jinnatul Ara confirmed that the administration conducted a thorough inquiry into the incident in coordination with local livestock officials. During questioning, Sarkar admitted to the act and issued a formal apology. As part of the resolution, he was required to sign a written undertaking on a 300-taka stamp, pledging to refrain from similar conduct in the future.
While family members of the accused—including his daughter-in-law, Sanjana Akter—acknowledged the severity of the act, they argued that the dog had previously attacked their livestock, leading to an impulsive reaction born of frustration. Despite the public backlash and subsequent investigation, Sarkar was released after providing the written commitment to the upazila administration.
