Chinese man travels to Bangladesh to marry after social media courtship

A 30-year-old Chinese national has traveled approximately 2,500 kilometers to marry a Bangladeshi student, marking the culmination of a whirlwind romance that began on social media. Wang Sulin, a restaurant owner from Lurang city in China’s Hebei province, arrived in Bangladesh on July 18 to unite with 20-year-old Nazmin Akter, an undergraduate student from Netrokona’s Mohanganj upazila.
The couple, who connected on Facebook two months ago, decided to marry after gaining the consent of both families. Upon his arrival in Dhaka, where he was greeted by Nazmin’s family, Wang converted to Islam and adopted the name Mohammad Nur Uddin. The marriage was formally registered via an affidavit on July 21, followed by traditional wedding festivities held on Friday at the bride’s family residence in the Daulatpur area of Mohanganj.
Mindful of recent reports regarding fraudulent unions involving foreign nationals, Nazmin’s family conducted extensive due diligence before moving forward. Her father, Nazim Uddin, a local businessman, confirmed that he verified the groom’s background by communicating directly with the Chinese family and consulting with the Chinese embassy in Bangladesh.
The arrival of the foreign groom has drawn significant local attention in Mohanganj, with residents gathering at the family home to catch a glimpse of the couple and share photos on social media. Despite initial concerns regarding the unconventional nature of the relationship, local neighbors have expressed their support after witnessing the thorough verification process undertaken by the bride’s family.
Following the wedding ceremonies, the couple plans to navigate the necessary visa and immigration documentation to allow Nazmin to join her husband in China. The groom is expected to return home shortly to initiate the formal procedures for his wife’s relocation.
