Bangladeshi court grants bail in Bangabandhus March 7 speech case

A former vice president of Dhaka University’s Shamsunnahar Hall student parliament has been granted interim bail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Sheikh Tasnim Afroz, also known as Emi, received the bail order from the High Court bench of Justices KM Zahid Sarwar and Sheikh Abu Taher on Thursday, which also included a rule.

The case stems from an incident on March 7, when Afroz and others announced a program to play a speech by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman near Shahbagh Police Station around 9:30 p.m. While playing the speech via a loudspeaker mounted on a rickshaw, they were reportedly obstructed by a group of Dhaka University students, including DUCSU leader AB Jubayer and Mosaddeq Ali Ibn Mohammad, along with Tahmid Al Modassir, convener of the NCP student organization Jatiyo Chhatra Shakti.

The situation escalated, and AB Jubayer and Mosaddeq Ali allegedly took Afroz and Abdullah Al Mamun, along with the rickshaw, inside the Shahbagh Police Station. Abdullah Al Mamun was reportedly beaten inside the station. Subsequently, the police detained the three individuals. The following day, they were arrested and sent to jail in connection with the case filed by the police under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

According to the case details cited by the police, Afroz and Abdullah Al Mamun, leading a group of 10 to 15 unidentified individuals, gathered in front of gate number 1 of the National Museum opposite Shahbagh Police Station. At the time, Taraweeh prayers were underway at the Shahbagh Police Station mosque. The prosecution alleges that the group shouted provocative slogans towards the mosque, attempting to activate banned organizations with the aim of conspiring against the government. The complaint further states that the group obstructed police duties and attempted to free an individual named Asif Ahmed Soikat who was in police custody. A group of students led by DUCSU representative AB Jubayer and Mohammad Mosaddeq then apprehended the individuals and handed them over to the police.
