A political gathering held by Jamaat-e-Islami inside a mosque in the Mithapukur sub-district of Rangpur has sparked widespread public outcry, with local residents and religious scholars condemning the act as a violation of the sanctity of the house of worship.
The controversy centers on a meeting held last Thursday following Maghrib prayers at the Chakpara Jame Mosque in Imadpur Union. During the event, party leaders set up tables and chairs inside the prayer hall to formally announce Manohar Badsha as the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the upcoming Imadpur Union Parishad chairman election. The session was attended by several high-ranking local party officials, including sub-district Ameer Asaduzzaman Shimul and Secretary Shafiqul Islam.

Images of the indoor political rally began circulating on social media shortly after the event, drawing immediate condemnation from local congregants. Critics argued that the use of a sacred space for partisan political maneuvers and the introduction of furniture into the prayer area undermined the decorum and traditional reverence associated with the mosque.
Mufti Masudur Rahman Qasemi, director of the Hulasuganj Jamia Quranian Darul Ulum Madrasa, noted that political programs frequently involve divisive rhetoric that is antithetical to the purpose of a mosque. He emphasized that utilizing a place of worship for party-specific agendas detracts from its spiritual environment rather than contributing to it.

In response to the mounting criticism, Asaduzzaman Shimul issued a statement via social media acknowledging that the optics of the event were perceived as inappropriate by many. He stated that the party intends to exercise greater caution in the future regarding the selection of venues for meetings and noted that he views the public backlash as constructive feedback.
