Husband detained after wife allegedly murdered in Keraniganj over drug dispute

Police in Keraniganj have detained a man on suspicion of murdering his wife and attempting to stage the crime as a suicide. The body of 20-year-old Mim Khatun was recovered Monday morning from a third-floor apartment in the Jhaupara area of South Keraniganj’s Shubhaddhya Union.
Mim, the daughter of Abdul Hamid Molla from Jhenaidah’s Shailkupa upazila, had been married to 26-year-old Dipu Biswas for three years. The couple, who have a 13-month-old daughter, had reportedly been living under increasing strain since moving to Keraniganj, where family members allege Dipu became addicted to drugs.
According to statements provided by neighbors, a violent altercation broke out early Monday morning after Dipu returned home under the influence of narcotics. Witnesses claim that Dipu physically assaulted Mim, leaving her unconscious and eventually dead. Investigators believe that in an attempt to cover up the homicide, Dipu tied an orna around the victim’s neck and suspended her body from a window to simulate a suicide. He then alerted neighbors, claiming she had taken her own life, and transported her to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital before returning to their residence.
When police arrived at the scene, Dipu reportedly attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam, who examined the scene, noted that the victim’s body bore multiple signs of physical trauma. Preliminary findings strongly suggest that the death was a homicide staged to look like self-inflicted harm.
The victim’s family has expressed outrage, calling for the maximum penalty for the accused. Abdus Salam, the victim’s uncle, emphasized the necessity of justice, fearing that the suspect could pose a danger to others if released. Building owner Rezaul Karim also confirmed reports of the suspect’s erratic behavior and frequent late-night returns, adding his voice to the growing demand for accountability.
Officer-in-Charge of South Keraniganj Police Station, Saiful Alam, confirmed that the suspect remains in custody. The body has been transferred to the morgue for a formal autopsy, which officials expect will provide definitive evidence regarding the cause of death. Legal proceedings against the suspect are currently underway.
