Garment workers block road in Chittagong to demand outstanding salary, long traffic jam

Workers of a garment factory have blocked the Arakan road, the busiest in Chittagong city, demanding payment of arrears and overtime. They started blocking the road in the C&B area of the city at around 11 am on Saturday. This has caused a long traffic jam on the busiest road. The road blockade continues till the time of writing this report at 3 pm.
The workers said that they are workers of a garment factory of the Azim group located in the Kalurghat basic industrial area of Chittagong city. They are owed one-and-a-half months’ salary and four months’ overtime. The workers demand payment, but the owner does not give it. So they came out of the factory on Saturday morning. Later he blocked the nearby Arakan road.
One of the city’s most important and busiest roads is virtually closed to traffic due to the blockade. There is heavy traffic on the road. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded. The passengers have suffered. Many people were forced to leave on foot. Apart from this, due to the road blockade, the movement of goods vehicles of other factories in the industrial area has also stopped. Meanwhile, a large number of law and order forces have been deployed in the road and factory areas to control the situation. In the meantime, the workers’ protest is going on.
Chittagong City Police Assistant Commissioner (Panchlaish) Kazi Md. Bidhan Abid told Prothom Alo at three o’clock on Saturday, “The workers said that the owner of Azim Group’s factory has arrears of salary and overtime. This problem has been going on since 2022. Now the workers are protesting. The police officer also said, “Discussions are going on with the owners and workers to bring the situation under control. However, the workers say that the owners have to come to the scene and talk. Then they will move from the road.
