HSC student expelled in Chittagong for using AI to cheat during examination

A Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinee in Chittagong was expelled on Monday after being caught using artificial intelligence to cheat during a board examination. The student, enrolled in the humanities department of a city college, was discovered at the Government Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College center while using a mobile phone to generate answers for the Civics and Good Governance paper.
According to Chittagong Education Board Examination Controller Mohammad Parvez Sajjad Chowdhury, the student managed to photograph the question paper inside the hall and uploaded it to an AI application to obtain solutions. Invigilators caught the student in the act of copying the AI-generated answers, leading to the immediate expulsion of the candidate and the seizure of the mobile device. The incident occurred during a day that also included examinations for Biology, Business Organization and Management, and Food and Nutrition.

The board reported that despite the disruption, the examination process continued across the region. Across the five districts of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban, 75,731 students participated in the tests across 114 centers. Data indicates that 1,825 candidates remained absent, with the highest number of absences recorded in Chittagong district at 1,202, followed by Cox’s Bazar with 263, Khagrachari with 154, Rangamati with 109, and Bandarban with 97.
The regional examinations follow a period of significant volatility for the Chittagong Education Board. Due to post-flood conditions, damaged infrastructure, and the health of the student body, the board had previously postponed HSC and equivalent exams beginning July 8. While examinations in other parts of the country proceeded according to their original schedules, the Chittagong board’s remaining papers were held in abeyance until authorities determined it was feasible to resume testing.
