Former student leader arrested following arson attempt on Khagrachari July memorial

Authorities in Khagrachari have detained a former leader of the outlawed Bangladesh Chhatra League following an act of arson at a monument dedicated to the July movement. The incident occurred Friday night at the Khagrachari Government College campus, where unidentified individuals doused the monument in gasoline and set it ablaze.

The act was captured in a 43-second video that has since circulated on social media, showing a group of individuals fleeing the scene immediately after igniting the structure. Local residents intervened quickly, successfully extinguishing the flames before significant damage could be inflicted upon the memorial.

Khagrachari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Kay Kislu confirmed the arrest of Md. Rony, a former vice president of the district branch of the banned student organization. Police are currently processing a formal case and have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend other suspects involved in the vandalism.

District Administrator Md. Anwar Sadat characterized the incident as an unsuccessful attempt to sabotage the monument. Following the disturbance, local officials have increased security patrols in the area to maintain order and protect public property.
