Former NCP official arrested over social media post targeting political leadership

Police arrested Ghazi Salauddin Tanvir, a former joint secretary of the Jatiya Nagarik Party (NCP), in the capital’s Monipur area early Wednesday morning in connection with a case filed under the Cyber Security Act. The arrest was executed by the Bogura District Police following allegations of derogatory social media posts targeting Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
According to Bogura Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md. Mahfuz Alam, the case was initiated by H.S. Mafutun Ahmed Khan, president of the Bogura Sadar unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Following his apprehension, Tanvir was transported to Bogura to be presented before the court.
The arrest follows a series of disciplinary actions taken by the NCP. On July 31, the party issued a temporary suspension against Tanvir after he published a controversial post regarding the acting chairman. While Tanvir later deleted the post and issued a public apology, pledging to avoid future recurrences, the legal proceedings initiated by the BNP moved forward.
Sarjis Alam, the NCP’s chief organizer for the northern region, expressed strong disapproval of the arrest via social media. Alam claimed the party had already addressed the matter internally and criticized both the BNP and law enforcement for what he described as an excessive display of authority. He further contextualized the tension by referencing recent unrest in Habiganj and Sylhet.
Tanvir’s tenure with the party has been marked by previous controversy. In April 2025, he faced a temporary suspension following allegations of irregularities involving the appointment of district commissioners and commissions related to the printing of government textbooks. That suspension was subsequently rescinded before the latest incident led to his current legal challenges.
