Dhaka Police expands AI traffic monitoring to 19 intersections as automated enforcement targets rising road violations

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has expanded its artificial intelligence-based traffic surveillance network to 19 intersections across the capital, aiming to bolster road safety and modernize enforcement. Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmad announced the expansion on Tuesday during an inauguration ceremony at the Tejgaon Traffic Division, where four additional AI cameras were activated along the high-security Lake Road, near the National Parliament and Zia Udyan.
The commissioner noted that since the initial deployment of AI monitoring, the system has successfully processed approximately 1,500 traffic violation cases. Officials plan to install these smart surveillance units at other critical intersections throughout the city in phases to ensure consistent enforcement.

Lake Road was selected for the latest installation due to its status as a vital artery connecting Mirpur, Mohammadpur, and Dhanmondi. Given its proximity to VVIP zones and high pedestrian traffic, authorities observed frequent incidents of reckless driving, excessive speed, and erratic lane switching. By deploying AI technology, the police aim to mitigate these risks without requiring officers to manually intercept vehicles in hazardous traffic conditions.
The AI system is directly integrated with the DMP command center, allowing for real-time detection of violations including speeding, illegal parking, lane drifting, and motorcycles operating without helmets. When a violation is captured, the system automatically triggers digital e-prosecutions. Notifications are subsequently sent to the vehicle owner’s mobile device, with formal case documentation delivered via post.

Commissioner Ahmad emphasized that this automated process ensures complete transparency in traffic enforcement. While the transition toward digital monitoring progresses, the department continues to manage a significant backlog, with approximately 38,000 traffic citations currently awaiting settlement.
Addressing broader concerns regarding urban mobility, the commissioner acknowledged the ongoing challenges posed by battery-operated rickshaws. He stated that while the DMP is maintaining enforcement operations, a sustainable solution requires inter-ministerial coordination and input from various stakeholders, as the police force cannot unilaterally resolve the issue of non-motorized vehicles on main roads.
