Shahjalal University expels two student leaders over assault allegations

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) authorities have expelled two former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders for four semesters following the assault of a fellow student at the Shahparan Hall. The decision was reached unanimously during an emergency syndicate meeting held Tuesday night, as confirmed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Khairul Islam.

The expelled students, Tareq Rahman of the Statistics department and Hasibur Rahman of the Political Studies department, were both members of the university’s 2021-22 academic session. Prior to the university’s disciplinary action, both individuals had been expelled from the JCD by the central committee on July 19 following the incident.

In addition to the academic suspension, the syndicate has imposed a permanent ban on the two individuals from entering the university campus for the duration of their punishment. Tareq Rahman further faces the revocation of his residential status, resulting in a permanent expulsion from the hall. The university administration has issued a stern warning against any future involvement in misconduct.

The disciplinary proceedings stemmed from an incident on July 18, when the two students allegedly assaulted Khairul Khandaker, a first-year student of the Social Science department. The conflict reportedly began after Khandaker posted comments in a WhatsApp group regarding the quality of food served at the Shahparan Hall canteen. The assault sparked three days of intense protests by the student body, eventually forcing the university to form a three-member investigation committee to probe the allegations.

Vice-Chancellor Khairul Islam emphasized that the decision was necessary to maintain campus stability and uphold the safety of the student population. He acknowledged the difficulty of taking such severe measures against students but maintained that the administration’s priority remains the preservation of a peaceful academic environment.
