A man was hacked to death in Cumilla’s Meghna upazila last Friday night following a dispute over the construction of a rural road, prompting a murder case against 15 named individuals, including a local youth leader.

Delowar Hossain Mridha, from Tulatuli village, succumbed to his injuries after being attacked. His elder brother, Abdul Baten Mridha, a reporter for Muktopath newspaper, filed the case at Meghna Police Station on Sunday night. The complaint names Md. Md. Shahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Meghna Police Station, confirmed that one person died and four others were injured in clashes stemming from a conflict over a rural road construction project. He noted that the victim’s elder brother had filed a murder complaint.

According to Abdul Baten Mridha’s complaint, the conflict began when Nasir Uddin initiated the construction of a new rural road directly across their agricultural land. Baten Mridha stated he had requested the road be built alongside their property instead, which angered Uddin. Although local dignitaries intervened and resolved the matter, Uddin reportedly refused to accept the decision.

Baten Mridha recounted that he and his younger brother, Delowar Hossain, were walking from their old house to their new residence around 12:30 AM on Friday when Nasir Uddin and his associates, who were reportedly lying in wait, ambushed them. The attackers indiscriminately hacked at them, causing severe injuries.

Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing their screams and rescued the two injured brothers. Delowar Hossain was initially admitted to Meghna Upazila Health Complex. His condition deteriorated, necessitating his transfer to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Three other individuals also sustained injuries and received medical treatment at Meghna Upazila Health Complex following the incident: Union Parishad member Nasir Uddin (48), his wife’s elder brother Abdul Halim (50), and Abdul Aziz (45) from Raghunathpur village. Abdul Aziz was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to the worsening of his condition.
