The government strongly protested some recent comments of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma about Bangladesh. Acting High Commissioner of India in Dhaka Pawan Kumar Bhade was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday afternoon and handed over a protest letter in this regard.
In the evening, a senior official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this information to Prothom Alo.

According to sources, the Indian ambassador was summoned to the office of Ishrat Jahan, Director General (South Asia Molecular Division) of the Ministry of External Affairs, after five o’clock this afternoon.
It is learned that an interview given by Himanta Biswa Sharma on ABP Live in the middle of this month has come to the attention of the government. In that interview, he made insulting and confusing comments about Bangladesh-India relations. In particular, his demands regarding the alleged ‘pushback’ or repatriation of illegal infiltrators have been completely rejected by Dhaka.

Calling the Acting High Commissioner of India, the Ministry of External Affairs has clearly said that any unsubstantiated statement on such a sensitive bilateral issue in public is not helpful for the relations of the two neighboring countries. Any outstanding issues should be resolved through international norms and existing bilateral frameworks. Indian political leaders were also urged to refrain from making comments that could affect the relationship between the two countries in the future.
When asked by Hemant Biswa Sharma on ABP Live whether suspected unregistered persons of Bangladeshi origin are extradited to Bangladesh through due process, the Assam chief minister said it is difficult to do so through the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. So they wait until nightfall and when no member of the border guard is present, push them across the border under the cover of darkness.
