Mentally unstable woman gives birth on highway roadside

A transient woman gave birth to a baby girl on the side of the Dhaka-Barishal highway in Madaripur early Friday morning, drawing immediate intervention from local residents and government authorities. The woman, estimated to be about 35 years old, had been a familiar figure in the Kalkini municipal area for approximately two years, often wandering local markets and providing inconsistent information regarding her identity.

The birth occurred near the Bhurghata bus stand bridge around 6:00 a.m. after the woman reportedly went into labor during the night. Local residents discovered the pair an hour later and promptly alerted the Kalkini Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). Swift action by administrative officials ensured that both the mother and newborn were transported to the Kalkini Upazila Health Complex for urgent care.

According to Dr. Shahata Jarab Salehin, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, an unidentified group had attempted to abduct or sell the infant shortly after birth. The swift arrival of administrative officials thwarted the attempt. The mother and child are currently under the constant supervision of hospital nursing staff and emergency department physicians, and both are reported to be in stable condition.

Kalkini Upazila Nirbahi Officer Saif-ul-Arefin stated that efforts are underway to determine the mother’s identity. The local administration has committed to assuming responsibility for the welfare of the infant, ensuring that the vulnerable pair receives necessary support and protection while the mother recovers under medical care.
