Clashes erupt at Comilla Victoria Government College over new student wing committee appointments

A violent clash between rival factions of the Chhatra Dal at Comilla Victoria Government College left at least five people injured on Monday, following the announcement of a new partial committee for the organization’s college unit. The confrontation occurred in front of the administrative building at the college’s degree and honors campus in the Dharmapur area of Comilla city.

The injured individuals include Shakil and Pratap, both supporters of the newly appointed president, Umar Faruk (Manik), as well as Talha Jobayer and Rayhan, who support the committee’s senior vice-president, Omar Faruk. Tareq Rahman, the newly appointed senior joint general secretary, also sustained injuries during the altercation.

The unrest follows Sunday’s announcement of a six-member partial committee for the college unit. The central Chhatra Dal office appointed Umar Faruk as president and Fatin Islam Molla as general secretary. Other positions include senior vice-president Omar Faruk, vice-president Jakir Hossain (Naim), senior joint general secretary Md. Tareq Rahman, and organizing secretary Farhan Iqbal Saad. The central leadership has directed the committee to finalize its full structure within 30 days.

Discontent emerged immediately following the announcement, as supporters of Omar Faruk and Tareq Rahman—who had reportedly sought the top two leadership positions—expressed grievances over their appointments to lower posts. The tension escalated on social media overnight and culminated in protest marches by dissatisfied members on Monday.

When these protestors arrived at the administrative building, an argument broke out between the rival groups, leading to a physical clash. Senior vice-president Omar Faruk alleged that his supporters were peacefully protesting when they were attacked by outsiders and members of the new committee. Conversely, president Umar Faruk denied the allegations, claiming the conflict began when his supporters requested that the marchers stop during the call to prayer.

Comilla Metropolitan Chhatra Dal president Nahiduzzaman Rana confirmed that the clash stemmed from internal dissatisfaction. He stated that the matter has been reported to the central leadership, which has promised to address the situation. Insiders suggest the factionalism is linked to local political loyalties, with the new appointees reportedly aligned with Metropolitan BNP president Udbatul Bari (Abu), while the disgruntled faction is linked to Metropolitan BNP general secretary Yusuf Molla (Tipu).

College Principal Abul Bashar Bhuiyan, who was attending a meeting at the education board during the incident, confirmed that authorities brought the situation under control with the assistance of police and faculty members. He has since held talks with students to ensure the preservation of the academic environment.

Officer-in-Charge of Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station, Touhidul Anwar, stated that police were deployed to the campus following the incident. He confirmed that the situation has returned to normal and noted that no formal complaints have been filed as of Monday evening.
