A Rajshahi University student was hospitalized early Sunday after being bitten by a venomous common krait while sleeping in his residential hall room. The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 AM in room 138 of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, prompting campus wildlife volunteers to capture a nearly three-foot-long snake from the premises shortly afterward.
The injured student has been identified as Nurnabi Islam, a first-year student enrolled in the Information Science and Library Management department for the 2022-23 academic session. Following the attack, he was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital via a university ambulance after immediately alerting his peers upon realizing he had been bitten on the leg.
Shamim Ahmed, a physician at the emergency department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, confirmed the nature of the reptile attack. Medical evaluations verified that the student suffered a common krait envenomation. He has already been administered two doses of antivenom, and medical personnel reported that his physical condition has improved, leaving him currently out of danger.
University student affairs adviser Professor A. H. M. Khursheed Alam stated that Nurnabi received prompt medical attention upon arrival at the hospital and is presently under close observation by physicians in a general ward. Authorities have kept intensive care unit preparations on standby should his condition deteriorate, while the university administration continues to monitor his recovery closely.
