Chittagong records highest July rainfall in 43 years as monsoon hits Bangladesh

Chattogram recorded its heaviest rainfall in 43 years over the past 24 hours, as intense monsoon conditions brought a deluge to the region. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the port city saw 394 millimeters of rainfall between Monday and Tuesday evening, marking a historical high for the month of July that has not been witnessed since 1983, when 407 millimeters were recorded.
The heavy precipitation was not limited to the city center, as the Ambagan area registered 344 millimeters and Sitakunda reported 170 millimeters. Meteorologist A.K.M. Nazmul Haque confirmed that the current weather pattern represents the highest rainfall levels for the season in both Chattogram and across the nation.
Data from the meteorological office indicates that the severe weather system has affected large swaths of the country. Hatiya in Noakhali recorded 143 millimeters of rain, while Khepupara in Patuakhali received 106 millimeters. Other significant accumulations included 94 millimeters in Teknaf, 91 millimeters in Feni, 82 millimeters in Patuakhali, and 78 millimeters in Cox’s Bazar. In the capital, Dhaka, rainfall reached 46 millimeters.
The BMD attributed the widespread downpour to an active monsoon flow over Bangladesh. Officials further warned that the North Bay of Bengal remains in a volatile state as these active atmospheric conditions persist.
