Child killed in autorickshaw collision during Chittagong festival procession

A four-year-old child was killed in a road accident Thursday afternoon in the Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram while attending a Rath Yatra procession. The victim, Jagannath De, was struck by a speeding battery-operated auto-rickshaw on the Banshbaria ferry terminal road.
Jagannath, the eldest son of expatriate Rubel De from Baruipara village in Hathazari, was visiting relatives in the Bainnarkhola area with his mother, Jaba Devi, to observe the religious festival. Witnesses reported that as the procession passed by, the mother and her children were standing along the roadside to watch when the auto-rickshaw, traveling at high speed from the direction of Banshbaria Beach, collided with the boy.
According to bystanders, the driver did not stop after the initial impact, and the vehicle’s rear wheel rolled over the child before the driver fled the scene.
Bystanders rushed the injured child to the Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead on arrival. The family subsequently transported the body to a private hospital in Chattogram city for a secondary assessment, where doctors again confirmed the death before the family took the remains to their village.
Dr. Fakhrul Amin, a physician in the emergency department of the Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the child arrived at the facility at approximately 4:45 p.m. Medical reports indicated the boy suffered fatal head trauma, significant bleeding from the ears, and broken teeth during the collision.
