Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Launches Two-Day World Music Day Festival

The Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy launched a two-day celebration of World Music Day on Sunday, marking the occasion with a vibrant parade and a series of orchestral performances that resonated through the rainy streets of Dhaka. The festivities began in the afternoon with a colorful procession from the academy’s music and dance auditorium to the National Theatre, where the release of balloons signaled the start of the event. Attendees were greeted by live piano renditions of iconic compositions, including those by Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, echoing through the theatre lobby.
The formal inauguration took place in the evening at the National Theatre auditorium, where the Shilpakala Academy orchestra, directed by Partha Majumder, performed a selection of classical and international tracks. Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury officially opened the event, joined by special guest Helal Khan, convenor of the Nationalist Cultural Organization (JASAS). The opening ceremony was presided over by Culture Ministry Secretary Kaniz Fatema, with welcoming remarks delivered by the academy’s Director General, Rezauddin Stalin.
Following the opening remarks, a concert showcased performances by prominent local artists. The ensemble, including Fahmida Nabi, Agun, and Mehrin, performed a stirring collaborative rendition of “Dhanadhanya Pushpa Bhara” alongside Michael Jackson’s “We Are the World.” The festival will conclude on Monday with final performances beginning at 5:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public.
In a separate cultural development, the Bhumi Art Gallery inaugurated a group exhibition titled “Persistence” at its new location in Uttara. The exhibition, which opened Saturday, features 66 works across various mediums by renowned artists such as Tarun Ghosh, Farida Zaman, and Kanak Chanpa Chakma. The opening ceremony was attended by U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen, along with noted artist Monirul Islam and several business leaders. The showcase is scheduled to remain open to visitors through June 25.
