Students blocked the road at Chittagong University for almost a quarter of an hour alleging that a CNG-powered autorickshaw driver beat up a student. Students started blocking the road in front of the main gate of the university from four o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday. With the assurance of the vice-chancellor, the blockade was lifted around 5:30 pm.

The name of the student who has been accused of beating is Mehdi Hasan. He is a postgraduate student in the Department of Marine Science. He is being treated at Chittagong University Medical Center.

The students said that around 3:30 PM Mehedi Hasan was attacked in the gate number 1 area of ​​the university. He took an autorickshaw from the roundabout to Gate No. 1. At that time, he was attacked for protesting the demand of increased rent.

The doctor in charge of the University Medical Center, Mostafa Kamal Hossain, said that the injured student had injuries on various parts of his body, including his face, hands, and neck. He is being treated. Further decision will be taken based on his physical condition.

According to university administration sources, when the news of Mehdi Hasan’s beating spread, the students gathered and started protesting in front of the main gate. At one stage they blocked the road. At this time, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Al-Forkan, Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Md. Kamal Uddin and members of the Proctoral Body. The students presented three demands to them. The demands are to arrest the autorickshaw driver, start circular bus from gate no.1 to main gate and set up police box at gate no.1. When the vice-chancellor assured to meet the demands, the students moved away from the road.

Chaksur Communications and Housing Affairs Secretary Ishaq Bhuya said, ‘Autorickshaw drivers were demanding extra fare as many visitors came to the campus on the occasion of Paila Baisakh. When a student protested, he was beaten up. Later we block. The Vice-Chancellor has assured that our three-point demand will be accepted. If the demand is not met, we will blockade again.

University Assistant Proctor Prof. Kamrul Hossain told Prothom Alo around five in the afternoon that the students lifted the blockade with the assurance of accepting the demands. The situation is currently normal.
