Public Health Experts and Colleagues Pay Tribute to Late Researcher Dr. Md. Khairul Islam

Colleagues, researchers, and public health advocates gathered at BRAC Tower in Mohakhali on Tuesday to honor the legacy of Dr. Md. Khairul Islam, a prominent public health expert, author, and researcher who passed away on August 21. The memorial service was jointly organized by Bangladesh Health Watch (BHW) and the BRAC James P. Grant School of Public Health.
Dr. Islam was widely recognized for his extensive contributions to public health, health management, water, sanitation, and hygiene. His career included significant fieldwork in several African nations, and he was a prolific author whose academic publications and articles played a critical role in shaping public discourse on health and development issues.
During the event, Ahmad Mushtaq Raja Chowdhury, convenor of Bangladesh Health Watch, announced that the organization’s tenth biennial report has been dedicated to Dr. Islam in recognition of his service. Dr. Islam served as a member of the BHW working group and held academic positions as an adjunct associate professor at the BRAC James P. Grant School of Public Health and the Centre for Population and Environmental Health at Griffith University.
Political scientist Rounaq Jahan reflected on Dr. Islam’s commitment to good governance, anti-corruption efforts, and public health advocacy, noting that the organization intends to pursue further initiatives in his honor.
Professor Laura Jean Reichenbach, Dean of the BRAC James P. Grant School of Public Health, described Dr. Islam as a beacon of leadership whose work would continue to inspire future generations of public health professionals. Mahrukh Mohiuddin, Managing Director of The University Press Limited, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Dr. Islam’s creative spirit and his impact as a mentor.
The memorial service, moderated by Yasmin Ahmed, served as a platform to recount Dr. Islam’s lifelong dedication to the development sector and his profound influence on the public health landscape in Bangladesh and beyond.
