Measles symptoms claim six more lives in Bangladesh as total death toll nears 1,000

Six more people have died from measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported on Tuesday.
According to the latest data, the deaths occurred between 8:00 a.m. Monday and 8:00 a.m. Tuesday. This brings the total death toll since March 15 to 979, comprising 880 deaths attributed to measles-like symptoms and 99 confirmed measles fatalities.
The DGHS report specifies that the six most recent fatalities were reported in the Dhaka, Sylhet, and Barishal divisions, with two deaths recorded in each area. No new deaths were linked to confirmed measles cases during this 24-hour window.
Health officials noted that while measles can affect individuals of any age, children remain the most vulnerable demographic. Epidemiologists maintain that all deaths involving measles-like symptoms during this current outbreak period are categorized as measles-related fatalities.
The data indicates that 1,159 new patients presented with measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative number of such cases to 159,150 since March 15. Additionally, 72 new cases of confirmed measles were identified, raising the total count of confirmed infections to 19,384.
Hospitalization data shows that 139,519 patients have been admitted for measles-related care since mid-March. Of those, 134,458 patients have since recovered and been discharged from medical facilities.
