Court orders CID probe into extortion and attempted murder case against July Shaheed Smriti Foundation officials

A case has been filed against 14 individuals, including officials and staff of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, following allegations of assault, extortion, and attempted murder. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam accepted the lawsuit on Tuesday and directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police to conduct a thorough probe into the matter.
The case was initiated by Mohammad Gias Uddin, a designated “July Fighter” as recognized in the official government gazette. Lawyer Mohammad Yasin Mia, representing the plaintiff, confirmed the court’s directive, stating that the CID has been ordered to submit its investigation report by October 5.
The primary accused in the case are Saidur Rahman Shahid, 24, and Iftekhar Hossain, 30, a senior verification officer at the foundation. Other named defendants include Mehedi Hasan Prince, Sagar, Afzalur Rahman Sayem, Harun Or Rashid, Mohammad Kamrul Hossain, Alif, Zahid, Momenuzzaman Dipu, Sajjad Mostafa, Sabrina Afroze Shrabanti, Fatema Afrin Payel, and Yasin Mostafa. The complaint also includes an additional 20 to 25 unidentified suspects.
According to the case files, the plaintiff visited the foundation on May 3 to collect a government-allocated grant of 300,000 taka. Gias Uddin alleged that officials repeatedly delayed the disbursement of his check using various pretexts and eventually demanded a bribe of 150,000 taka—representing 50 percent of the total grant—as a condition for release.
The plaintiff claims that when he refused to pay the extortion money, he was lured into a private room where he was subjected to physical assault and torture. Gias Uddin stated that he lost consciousness during the attack and required emergency treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. His condition later necessitated a transfer to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), where he reported severe damage to his right eye.
Gias Uddin explained that he initially attempted to file a complaint at the Ramna Police Station following the incident, but officers refused to register the case. Seeking legal recourse, he proceeded to file the petition in court. The charges include sections of the Penal Code related to causing grievous hurt, attempted murder, theft, extortion, and criminal intimidation.
