Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Urges Focus on Future Development Over Past Disputes

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi stated on Tuesday that while the past cannot be forgotten, development efforts will remain stalled if the nation remains fixated on history.

The remarks were made following a meeting at the Secretariat with Minister for Local Government Abdul Moin Khan. Addressing reporters after the 30-minute discussion, Trivedi emphasized the necessity of moving forward despite historical challenges.

When asked about Bangladesh’s internal political climate, the High Commissioner declined to offer an opinion, maintaining that he should not interfere in domestic matters. He noted that the government, backed by a two-thirds majority, is best positioned to understand the needs of its people and determine the country’s direction.

State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, who was also present at the meeting, stated that the discussion centered on local government elections. He noted that the High Commissioner shared insights from India’s own experiences with local governance.

Minister Alam acknowledged that the upcoming local elections in the current fiscal year present a significant challenge for the administration, which is tasked with ensuring a free and fair electoral process.

Trivedi underscored that the primary objective of his mission is to foster direct relations between the citizens of both nations. He noted that regardless of who serves as High Commissioner, the commitment to bilateral cooperation remains consistent. He added that as neighbors, both countries share a responsibility to prioritize the welfare of their common people, asserting that all nations should be viewed as equals regardless of size.

In addition to local governance and regional cooperation, the two officials discussed the promotion of free trade. When asked about a potential visit to India by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Trivedi did not provide a comment, choosing instead to reiterate the importance of the two nations working together in harmony.
