Police investigate heist of 1.25 million taka by imposters posing as detectives in Noakhali

Police in Noakhali’s Companiganj Upazila have yet to make any arrests or recover the 1.25 million taka stolen from a bank agent by a group posing as Detective Branch (DB) officers. Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the Islami Bank Basurhat branch, which has led to the identification of one primary suspect.
The victim, Abdur Rahman, is the in-charge of the Islami Bank Abu Majhirhat agent branch. He filed a formal complaint with the Companiganj Police Station late Monday night following the robbery, which occurred near the M. Majidia Government Primary School in Ward No. 1 of Charhazari Union.
According to the police report, Rahman was traveling by motorcycle toward his branch after withdrawing 1.2 million taka from the Islami Bank Basurhat branch at approximately noon on Monday. Near the M. Majidia Government Primary School, a group of five individuals intercepted him, falsely claiming to be members of the Detective Branch.
The assailants alleged that Rahman was in possession of illegal narcotics. They held him at gunpoint, handcuffed him, and forced him into a private car. Inside the vehicle, the perpetrators bound his hands and eyes with a cloth and physically assaulted him before seizing the cash. Rahman was later abandoned in a location near Nabir Dokan in Kabirhat Upazila while still restrained.
Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Nurul Hakim confirmed that the investigation is a top priority, with efforts underway to track the private vehicle used in the crime and identify the remaining suspects.
Regarding the progress of the investigation, Officer-in-Charge Hakim noted that footage from the Islami Bank Basurhat branch shows a suspect wearing a polo shirt and black trousers, carrying a black backpack. The individual’s behavior on camera was deemed suspicious, and police are actively searching for his whereabouts.
