Udichi Shilpi Gosthi Celebrates Poet Sukanta Bhattacharya Birth Centenary in Dhaka

The Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi commemorated the birth centenary of poet Sukanta Bhattacharya on Friday with a call to establish a new societal foundation. Held at the Liberation War Museum auditorium in Agargaon, the event was presided over by Mahmud Selim, acting president of the central committee of Udichi.
Speakers at the event, including economist Professor M.M. Akash, Udichi General Secretary Amit Ranjan Dey, Assistant General Secretary Pradip Ghosh, author and researcher Mamun Siddiqui, and cultural personality Abul Khayer, reflected on the poet’s enduring legacy. They noted that despite a literary career spanning only six to seven years, Bhattacharya’s work continues to inspire generations. The speakers highlighted his role as a voice for the common people during the horrors of the World War II era and the man-made famines orchestrated under colonial rule.
Participants emphasized that despite eight decades of political, technological, and economic shifts in Bangladesh, the fundamental challenges of the past persist. Issues such as wealth inequality, unemployment, rising commodity prices, the exploitation of laborers, agricultural injustices, corruption, and environmental crises render Bhattacharya’s revolutionary literature as relevant today as it was during his lifetime.
Mahmud Selim remarked that Bhattacharya’s poetry remains a weapon in the ongoing struggles for justice, asserting that wherever there is conflict, the spirit of the poet remains present.
Following the discussion, members of the central and Dhaka metropolitan branches of Udichi paid tribute to the poet by lighting one hundred candles before his portrait. Vice President Belayet Hossain led the audience in reciting the poem “Chharpatra” as a pledge of commitment to the poet’s ideals. The cultural segment featured a dance performance of the song “Obak Prithibi,” choreographed by Warda Rihab and performed by artists from Dhriti Nartanala.
The musical portion of the program included renditions of Bhattacharya’s poetry, such as “He Mohamanob Ekbar Esho Phire,” “He Sathi Ajke Swapner Din Gona,” and “Himalay Theke Sundarban Hotat Bangladesh.” Solo performances were delivered by Alok Dasgupta, Joya Sengupta, Shawon Kumar Roy, Saraswati Sarkar, and Bijoy Banik.
The event concluded with a choral recitation themed around the poet’s vision for a new foundation, planned by Belayet Hossain and directed by Shikha Sengupta. Additional recitations were provided by Masuduzzaman, Shikha Sengupta, Sumit Pal, and the Srot Abritti Sangsad. The program was hosted by Sangita Imam, Mita Roy, and Sheikh Anisur Rahman.
