Three writers receive Humayun Kabir Literary Award in Dhaka

The Faridpur Sahitya Parishad honored three authors with the Humayun Kabir Literary Award during a ceremony held at the Begum Sufiya Kamal Auditorium of the National Museum in Dhaka on Friday. The annual award, now in its second year, recognizes significant contributions to literature, celebrating the multifaceted legacy of Humayun Kabir, a distinguished scholar, politician, and writer born in Komarpur, Faridpur.

This year, the award for research was conferred upon Mohammad Hannan, while Azadur Rahman received the recognition for poetry, and Kizi Tahnin was honored for her work in fiction. Each recipient was presented with a crest and a check for 50,000 taka. Following the presentation, Azadur Rahman shared his reflections on the weight of the recognition and his philosophical perspectives on poetry and life.

Born in 1906, Humayun Kabir was a polymath who studied philosophy, political science, and economics at Oxford University. Throughout his career, he balanced literary pursuits with a rigorous commitment to education and politics. Notably, he served as the Education Minister of India twice and played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s educational policies.

Professor Fatima Jahan of Bangalore University highlighted the enduring influence of Kabir’s contributions to the Indian education system during the event. She noted that while his origins in Faridpur remain a point of pride, his extensive political and literary impact is often overlooked by contemporary students in India.

The ceremony was presided over by Jalal Ahmed, former Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur and current Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission. Other notable speakers, including fiction writer and Jibanananda researcher Faizul Latif Chowdhury, writer and translator Andalib Rashdi, and Mohammad Ali Khan, addressed the audience regarding Kabir’s significant intellectual and political history. The event opened with a documentary screening detailing the lives and achievements of the three award recipients.
