Renowned Actor Hasan Masud Steps Away From Acting to Pursue Religious Life

Renowned actor, director, and writer Hasan Masud, once a prominent figure in Bangladeshi television and cinema, has stepped away from acting to pursue a life of religious devotion. In a recent interview, Masud revealed that his withdrawal from the entertainment industry is a result of a profound personal transformation.

Masud explained that he has largely retreated from public life, noting that he now limits his professional involvement to occasional commercial advertisements. The actor attributed this shift to his newfound dedication to faith, highlighting that he recently completed the Hajj pilgrimage, during which he spent 41 days in Mecca and Medina. He emphasized that this spiritual change began well before his pilgrimage and that he has now fully embraced this lifestyle.

Addressing his past habits, the former actor noted a significant departure from his former intellectual pursuits. Masud revealed that he has stopped reading books entirely after feeling that excessive consumption of literature had rendered him emotionally detached. He described his former self as having become mechanical, lacking basic human empathy. To mark this change, he sold his collection of approximately 1,200 books at a low price in Nilkhet.

Hasan Masud’s career path has been multifaceted. He joined the Bangladesh Army as a cadet in 1985 and retired as a captain in 1992. Following his military service, he transitioned into journalism, working for The New Nation and later joining The Daily Star as a sports reporter in 1995. Between 2004 and 2008, he served as a correspondent for BBC Bangla.

His entry into the entertainment industry came in 2003 with the film Bachelor, directed by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki. He also lent his voice to the song “Ajke Na Hoy Bhalobasho” for the film and released a musical album titled Hridoyghotito in 2006. Over his career, Masud appeared in several acclaimed films and television dramas, including Made in Bangladesh, Housefull, Taxi Driver, FDC, Bou, Khunsuti, Graduate, Ronger Duniya, Amader Songsar, Goni Saheber Sesh Kichudin, and Batasher Ghor.
