Bollywood actor Govinda reveals he once attempted suicide following mother Nirmala Devis death

Bollywood actor Govinda has opened up about a traumatic period in his life, revealing that he once attempted to take his own life following the death of his mother, the renowned classical singer and actress Nirmala Devi.

In an interview with the Indian news agency ANI, Govinda recounted the events of 1996, describing a state of profound grief after his mother passed away on June 15 at the age of 69. Overwhelmed by the loss, the actor traveled to the banks of the Narmada River, where he ventured into the water in a desperate search to reunite with his mother.

When asked if the incident was a suicide attempt, Govinda acknowledged the sentiment, describing it as an expression of his deep emotional attachment to his mother. He noted that while the world might label the act as suicide, he viewed it through a different lens, suggesting that life does not end but merely transforms.

The actor’s path was interrupted by a sage named Ram Kundal, who was present at the riverbank. The sage called out to Govinda and asked him what was wrong, a moment the actor credits with restoring his senses and helping him realize the gravity of his actions. Govinda stated that the encounter forced him to recognize his responsibilities toward his children, noting that it took him approximately 10 to 15 days to fully recover from that mental state.

Reflecting on the impact of his mother’s passing, Govinda emphasized that his professional success and fame were secondary to his personal duty. He described acting and stardom as temporary roles bestowed by a higher power, asserting that his true achievement was fulfilling the dreams his mother had envisioned for him by the time he reached the age of 21.

Govinda is currently focused on the promotional activities for his upcoming film, titled Rupa.
