Rajshahi University Student Union General Secretary Files Attempted Murder Case Over Office Attack

The General Secretary of the Rajshahi University Central Students Union (RUCSU), Salahuddin Ammar, has filed an attempted murder case against five students and seven to eight unidentified individuals following an alleged attack on the union building. The complaint was submitted to the Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on August 10, though the development was only confirmed publicly on Tuesday.

Plaintiff lawyer Mohammad Salahuddin stated that the court has directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegations. A formal decision on the acceptance of the case will be rendered by the court following the submission of the PBI investigation report.

The accused are identified as Mohammad Anas from the Department of History, Mahmudul Hasan Mahin and Mamun Mia from the Department of Sanskrit, Mahfuzul Islam (Nayan) from the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Azharul Islam from the Department of Islamic Studies.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on July 27 inside the RUCSU office. The plaintiffs allege that the accused forced their way into the office armed with local weapons, verbally abused Salahuddin Ammar, and physically assaulted him when he protested. The complaint further alleges that the group vandalized office furniture, resulting in approximately 100,000 taka in damages.

The legal filing claims that the accused, Mohammad Anas, attempted to strike the RUCSU information and research secretary, Nazmus Sakib, with an iron rod. Sakib sustained a hand injury while attempting to deflect the blow. Another individual, Mahin Mehedi, was allegedly struck in the ear with a stick by Mahfuzul Islam when he attempted to intervene.

Addressing the media following the filing, Salahuddin Ammar described the legal action as a protective measure, noting that the attack involved his colleagues and required formal documentation to address the broader context of campus instability.

The university has seen a series of violent confrontations in recent weeks. On the same day as the alleged attack, reports surfaced that Salahuddin Ammar had assaulted Mohammad Anas at the proctor’s office, accusing him of being a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist. Subsequent to that incident, student groups, including members associated with the Shibir organization, reportedly assaulted students inside the central library.

Following the library incident, police arrested Mohammad Anas and Abul Hasan at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in connection with a separate, pending anti-terrorism case. On July 30, the father of one of the assaulted students filed a separate attempted murder case against Salahuddin Ammar and eight other leaders associated with RUCSU and Shibir.
