Rubaiyat Hossain’s The Difficult Bride Secures Slot at Toronto International Film Festival

The 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), scheduled for September 10–20, will feature the international screening of “The Difficult Bride,” a project marking another milestone for Bangladeshi cinema on the global stage. Starring acclaimed actress Azmeri Haque Badhon, the film serves as the latest achievement for director Rubaiyat Hossain, whose work continues to gain traction following the film’s selection for the Orizzonti competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.
Produced by the Bangladeshi firm Khana Talkies, the film is a significant international co-production involving partners from France, Germany, Portugal, and Norway. This collaborative effort has positioned the project within a competitive global lineup, allowing it to stand alongside high-profile international features, including May el-Toukhy’s “Woman Unknown,” Muayad Alayan’s “Conversation with the Sea,” and various award-winning entries such as Marie-Clementine Dusabejambo’s “Be’Imana” and Beliscka Griesbach’s “The Dreamed Adventure.”
An ecological and supernatural thriller, “The Difficult Bride” explores a narrative woven around a beauty parlor in Dhaka, an impending wedding, and the lingering trauma of childhood. The film’s cast features a notable ensemble, including Zaynin Chowdhury Karim, Sunerah Binte Kamal, and Rikita Nandini Shimu alongside Badhon.
The inclusion of the film in the Toronto program underscores a growing international recognition of Bangladeshi storytelling. By securing a spot at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, the production has solidified its status as a pivotal entry in the ongoing advancement of Bengali cinema within the international artistic community.
