NCP Gaibandha branch disavows provocative slogan used during protest march

A video circulating on social media has triggered controversy in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila after participants in a National Citizen Party (NCP) protest were heard chanting provocative slogans targeting the student organization Islami Chhatra Shibir. The 28-second clip, which emerged on Facebook on Friday evening, captures protesters chanting “dhor dhor Shibir dhor” (catch, catch, catch Shibir) alongside other political slogans.
The demonstration was organized by the Sundarganj upazila and municipal branches of the NCP to protest an alleged attack on a vehicle convoy carrying the party’s chief organizer, Sarjis Alam, and chief coordinator, Nasiruddin Patwary, in Habiganj last Wednesday. The protest procession traveled through the main streets of Sundarganj upazila town before concluding with a rally at the old upazila parishad premises.
Following the backlash over the video, the NCP issued a formal statement on its official Facebook page, distancing the party from the chants. The organization claimed that the controversial slogan was shouted by an individual described as mentally unstable who had briefly gained access to the hand microphone while the designated protest leader had momentarily stopped chanting.
Ariful Islam, convener of the NCP’s Sundarganj municipal branch, reiterated in a telephonic conversation that the individual behind the slogan is not affiliated with the party. According to the party’s official statement, the incident was unintended and was brought under control immediately once party leaders intervened to take the microphone away.
The NCP leadership expressed regret over the incident, stating that the slogan did not reflect the party’s policies, organizational stance, or decisions. The group issued an apology to all parties involved, characterizing the event as an unforeseen lapse during the protest.
