International Crimes Tribunal Inspectors Probe Secret Detention Facility in Dhaka Investigation

International Crimes Tribunal-1 judges, accompanied by prosecution and defense lawyers, conducted a formal inspection of the Task Force for Interrogation (TFI) cell at the Rapid Action Battalion-1 headquarters in Dhaka’s Uttara on Saturday. The facility, widely identified as the infamous “Aynaghor” or “Mirror House,” became a focal point of investigation into allegations of systemic enforced disappearances and torture during the tenure of the now-banned Awami League administration.
Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam described the conditions inside the facility as horrific, noting that the site contained 29 cells of varying sizes. According to the investigation, victims were held in spaces so confined that they were unable to lie down, forcing them to remain in a seated position for months or even years. The prosecution confirmed that the physical state of the facility corroborated the harrowing testimonies provided by survivors, many of whom were held incommunicado before eventually being released and processed through fabricated criminal cases.
The inspection revealed that several high-profile figures, including BNP leader Ilias Ali and former lawmaker Mir Ahmed Bin Quasem, were among those detained in the facility. During the briefing, Aminul Islam noted that approximately 250 individuals remain missing, their whereabouts still unknown.
Addressing concerns regarding potential tampering with the site, the Chief Prosecutor stated that significant evidence had been destroyed and new structures erected at the location. He affirmed that those responsible for compromising the integrity of the crime scene would face legal consequences as the investigation proceeds.
While the prosecution emphasized the importance of the site visit for gathering judicial evidence, defense counsel Md. Tabarak Hossain Bhuiyan maintained that the visit was conducted according to legal protocols. However, he contested the terminology used to describe the facility, asserting that the TFI cell is a conceptual framework rather than a defined, singular location.
