Police arrest suspect in brutal murder of teenage girl in Keraniganj

Authorities have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old girl whose body was discovered in a secluded area of South Keraniganj earlier this week. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) confirmed on Thursday that the suspect, Rana Hawlader, has confessed to the killing and provided a formal statement to the court.
The victim, identified as Mosammat Tanjila, disappeared on Monday afternoon after leaving her aunt’s residence. Her body, bearing fatal neck wounds, was recovered by police the following morning in the Madinanagar area. According to PBI Dhaka District Superintendent M.N. Morshed, the victim’s mother initiated a murder case at the Keraniganj Model Police Station immediately after the discovery.
Investigators utilized digital surveillance and forensic evidence to track Hawlader, an autorickshaw driver, to his location in the Rajendrapur area. He was taken into custody during a raid conducted in the early hours of Wednesday. Following his arrest, officers recovered the murder weapon, two smartphones belonging to the victim, and various pieces of jewelry that had been stolen from the scene.
According to investigating officer Sub-Inspector Md. Saiful Haque, the suspect and the victim had been in a relationship for approximately eight months. Hawlader, who had two previous marriages, reportedly decided to kill the teenager following a recent deterioration in their relationship.
Evidence indicates that on Monday night, Hawlader transported the victim to a vacant housing plot in Madinanagar under the guise of driving her home. During an argument at the isolated location, he allegedly used a knife to kill her before fleeing with her personal belongings. The suspect is now in custody awaiting trial.
