Dhallywood’s beloved actress Moushumi is set to return to the big screen with director Hasan Jahangir’s new film, “Contract Marriage,” which explores the intricate challenges and ethical dilemmas faced by Bangladeshi expatriates, particularly the contentious issue of second marriages abroad. The film, largely shot in the United States, is scheduled for release in Bangladeshi cinemas on May 15, following its censor certification in March.

The narrative centers on a married woman who leaves her husband in Bangladesh to pursue a second marriage overseas, delving into the social and personal complexities that arise. Director Jahangir emphasized that the film aims to deliver a message of awareness, shedding light on the struggles faced by countless Bangladeshis who relocate abroad each year and the intricate processes through which they establish new lives.

Jahangir confirmed that the bulk of the film, approximately 80 percent, was shot across various locations in the United States, with the remaining production completed in Bangladesh. He stated that the stories woven into “Contract Marriage” are drawn directly from real-life experiences, reflecting the universal challenges of adapting to foreign environments and the personal sacrifices involved. “These stories of life’s struggles abroad are common to many, and audiences should see them,” he remarked.

Having secured its censor certificate in March, “Contract Marriage” marks Moushumi’s first major release in two years, following her appearance in “Shonar Chor.” The director indicated that the mid-May release date was strategically chosen between the two Eid festivals, a period they believe is optimal for audience engagement. Additionally, the film is slated for international distribution in the United States, Canada, and several other countries, broadening its reach to expatriate communities.

Further expanding its audience accessibility, the television rights for “Contract Marriage” have been sold, with plans for a world premiere on TV during the upcoming Eid celebrations.
