Former Narayanganj Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy Granted Personal Appearance Exemption in Police Assault Case

Former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy appeared in court on Tuesday, roughly two months after her release on bail, as legal proceedings continue against her in a case involving allegations of obstructing police work and vandalism. During the hearing at the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Nurul Huda Chowdhury, the court granted a request from Ivy’s legal counsel to exempt her from mandatory personal appearances, allowing her lawyers to represent her until the commencement of the trial.

The case, which originated from an incident involving an alleged attack on police officers and public property, has seen the court officially accept a charge sheet naming 69 individuals, including the former mayor. During the same proceedings, the court issued arrest warrants for the accused who remain at large. While Ivy’s name was not listed in the initial first information report, she was formally implicated in the investigation in November of last year. Her defense counsel, Awlad Hossain, noted that the request for exemption from personal attendance was based on the former mayor’s prolonged incarceration and ongoing health complications.

Speaking to reporters following the hearing, Ivy maintained her innocence and framed the legal challenges as a consequence of her past efforts to combat injustice and violence within Narayanganj. She expressed confidence that the citizens of the city would ultimately judge her actions.

Ivy, who previously served as the mayor of Narayanganj for over two decades—first as municipal leader starting in 2003 and later serving three consecutive terms as city corporation mayor—was initially arrested in May 2024. Following her detention, she was named in 12 separate cases related to violence and attempted murder during the civil unrest of that period. After securing bail from the High Court and clearing various legal hurdles, she was released from the Kashimpur Central Jail on June 3.
