Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to Visit Moulvibazar Amid Growing Local Demands for Regional Development

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to make his first official visit to Moulvibazar since the new government assumed office, sparking a massive administrative and political mobilization across the district. The visit, scheduled for Wednesday, has triggered extensive infrastructure improvements, including road repairs and a comprehensive cleanup of the 55-kilometer route from Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport to Srimangal.
The Prime Minister is expected to land at Osmani International Airport before traveling to Srimangal’s Victoria High School grounds and subsequently to the Moulvibazar Government High School grounds in the district headquarters. During the visit, he will officially distribute family cards to beneficiaries from Srimangal’s Mirzapur Union and Rajnagar’s Tengra Union. Under this pilot program, 307 families are set to receive monthly financial assistance of 2,500 taka.

While the district prepares for the high-profile event, local residents are using the opportunity to spotlight longstanding regional grievances. Key demands resurfacing ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival include the establishment of a medical college and a public university, the operationalization of the Shamshernagar airport to boost tourism, and the implementation of development projects for the district’s vast wetland areas.
Logistical planning has been marked by significant activity, including the relocation of the originally planned Rajnagar rally to the larger Moulvibazar Government High School grounds to accommodate expected crowds. While the change was made for practical reasons, some residents in Rajnagar expressed disappointment, noting that a visit to their locality would have provided an ideal platform to press for local infrastructure upgrades, including the declaration of Rajnagar as a municipality and the extension of gas utility connections.

Local officials and party leaders are coordinating closely to ensure the event’s success. M. Nasser Rahman, Member of Parliament for Moulvibazar-3 and a member of the BNP national executive committee, emphasized that the visit is a crucial opportunity to formally present the district’s core development priorities to the Prime Minister.
“We made various commitments during the election, and the Prime Minister is acutely aware of these,” Rahman stated during an inspection of the rally site. “The establishment of a medical college, the activation of the Shamshernagar airport, and the creation of a university are not just public demands—they are my priorities as well.”
The district administration and law enforcement agencies have implemented rigorous security and organizational protocols. Roads are being cleared of debris and obstructions, bridge railings are being repainted, and workers are laboring to finalize the stage and marquee structures at the rally venue. Despite intermittent rain creating muddy conditions at the site, local BNP committees have organized celebratory processions to welcome the Prime Minister, with party officials confirming that grassroots outreach has been intensified across all unions and wards to ensure a significant turnout.
