Flooding persists across Bangladesh as heavy rainfall begins to taper off

Persistent heavy rainfall across Bangladesh has triggered flooding in low-lying areas of at least seven districts, compounding concerns over waterlogging as the nation braces for continued precipitation. While the capital city experienced intermittent rain throughout Saturday, the intensity of the downpour has begun to show signs of decline.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has officially withdrawn the local cautionary signal number three for the country’s four maritime ports, citing a reduction in gusty winds over the sea. Additionally, authorities have lifted earlier warnings regarding potential landslides. Despite these measures, meteorological data indicates that while the most severe rainfall in recent days was concentrated in the Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, Chuadanga recorded the highest precipitation in the last 24 hours at 147 millimeters.
Meteorologist A.K.M. Nazmul Haque attributed the sustained heavy weather to the convergence of a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal with active monsoon winds, coupled with shifts in atmospheric pressure. According to the department’s latest forecast, while overall rainfall intensity is expected to gradually diminish, areas within the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience moderate to heavy showers in the coming 24 hours.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has issued a specific alert regarding the Teesta River, where water levels are expected to rise over the next 48 hours due to upstream runoff and continued precipitation in the northern region. Although the geographic spread of the rain is narrowing, water levels in many rivers remain elevated, particularly in northern, northeastern, and hilly areas.
Officials expect the situation to begin normalizing across most parts of the country starting Tuesday, as the current weather system weakens. Until then, citizens in affected regions remain under advisory for potential localized waterlogging and persistent flood risks in low-lying zones.
